“All things bright and beautiful, all creatures great and small.” The song and the story, both tell of the many pleasures that animals bring into our lives. In our homes, they are good company. The purr of a cat, the thump of a dog’s tail wagging, our friends warm up a lonely evening.
Outside, we drink in the sweet peace of sheep in a field, the slow movement of cows, or the nicker of a horse leaning over a fence.
We relish the stab of wonder we feel when a deer turns to look from the edge of the wood. We feel oddly pierced when a coyote howls in the night or a loon calls from the early morning mist.
The leap of a fish, the arc of a heron, the slap of a beaver’s tail, these splash a long moment of awe into our lives. Animals are fully part of our lives. And they are very much part of our well-being in the world.
At Holy Trinity Anglican Church, that special connection is celebrated annually. Inspired by St. Francis of Assisi, we bring our beloved creatures for “The Blessing of Animals.” Dogs, cats, birds and hamsters, they are all welcome to join us in the sanctuary. There, Father Andrew Wilson will bless each one, great or small.
And those creatures who can’t get up and down the stairs easily, like Stefan, the Welsh pony, will be blessed outside on the front lawn.
You’re welcome to join us; bring your pet to the church on Sunday, October 5th, at 10:30 AM.
